Blossom Bounty

September 30, 2023

Hakawai is facing the wrong way – he should be looking at the cherry blossom! I don't think I'm imagining that there's an unusually large amount of blossom on our trees this year. The branches of our flowering cherries, amelanchier and fruit trees are completely covered with blossoms. I love the different colours of our pink cherry blossom, red cherry blossom and the white amelanchiers.

I can't find anything online saying that this is a good blossom year in New Zealand, although the UK had particularly good blossoms in spring 2023. The driving forces were a warm summer with lots of light and cool winter temperatures that retard blossom so it all arrived at once in spring. We didn't have a particularly warm summer in Gibbston, but we didn't have a cold one either. The early part of winter was very cold and foggy, so maybe those are the reasons here too. Now I am hoping that we don't get any severe frosts, like we did last November, so the fruit will stay on the trees. However, there's always another problem out there to worry about so what I should really focus on doing is enjoying the flowers!
